I read the book titled "Brave New World" as part of my Junior Year English curriculum. I greatly enjoyed this masterpiece and spent many days debating over the significant meanings behind the author's story with my teacher. Here are some summaries and informational facts about the book.

Brave New World
Ch.1-4 Response

With the introduction of Brave New World, it became apparently obvious that the book would be slightly difficult, regarding use of vocabulary, to read and comprehend. However, I’ve noticed that for some odd reason, it is almost easily understandable. On any note, the book is uniquely interesting. As thus far, the book has successfully managed to inform one of the current situation in which humans are living. They’re social system is made up of 5 basic categories, each with 2 sub-categories. Socially ranking from highest to lowest, there are Alphas, Betas, Deltas, Gammas, and, last but least, Epsilons. Each category is then divided into either a plus or minus, ex: Aplha plus, Beta minus. So far it has been left to assumption that the plus and minus sub-categories are a way of differentiating the basic categories, however this has not yet been described in full. Currently,(at the beginning of chapter 5), there have been five main characters. The characters are delicately, and intricately, related to one another in a sort of distant way. Their past connections to one another have been left so far untold, so the interest thus far has basically been learning the current situation.

I must admit that I have taken keen interest in this book. Although the language is frequently difficult to understand, the book provides superb descriptive language to help comprehend the book. Here are some of the following characters:

D.H.C. – A man of strict regulation and rules. It is at first apparent that the D.H.C. is very independent obedient only to himself, however we discover later that he too has someone that he must obey, but not only obey, but admire.

Ford(controller)- On of the world’s ten controllers. Not too much is yet known about this character besides the fact that he is very pro for the current world in which he lives and also that he is very powerful and intelligent.

Lenina – A nineteen year old girl who is apparently falling in love with a man named Henry. She denies emotional attachment to her friend, Fanny, but the book holds hence to great clues about a possible love connection between Lenina and Henry.

Henry – Not much is known about this character except the fact the he offers to one of his friends that he “tries” Lenina because she is exceptionally euphoric. This hints that maybe he does not feel as Lenina does. Also, Henry “has” other females.

Fanny – Friend of Lenina; Controlled by society and dependent on the rules of society. Fanny is not very different from the standard human at this time. Although I feel as though she may surprise us later on.

Bernard and Helmholtz – Two men who are apparently slightly different from society. Both are Alpha’s(the social value of society) and both have some sort of secret between them. The book hints that these two men are planning something or undergoing a current experiment of some sort, however no proof is given. Bernard has less physical stature then those of his social class, leaving him to feel outcasted and unwanted, even though he is among the highest ranking. Helmholtz is similar, but different. He too is the top of the social ladder, however he has little interest or desire to obtain or receive things which are generally subject to great want throughout all men. Apparently, he is more interested in what secret is being kept between himself, and Bernard.

Brave New World
Response Ch 5-8

Lenina and Bernard have taken a trip to New Mexico. They are visiting an Indian reservation and Bernard is learning about the ways of the people from John, who is telling his experiences thus far. Lenina is talking to a girl, whos name I have forgotten, about how she came to be a captive of the Indian reservation. Bernard seems to be even more unique then I first guessed. It appears to me that Bernard has had no mind control from the conditioning as a child. The biggest hint towards this was that he took a dislike to one female’s unibrow, suggesting that he was not immune to dislike human defaults as many of the people are. From what I’m thinking, it appears that Bernard is desperately trying to teach Lenina, or for lack of better words, unteach Lenina, all that she had learned from the conditioning. Bernard is currently in some-what hostile terms with the DHC and has been informed that he will be relocated to Iceland.
